Constructed in 1941, the vernacular-style cottages located in Coral Gables’ McFarlane District and West Coconut Grove stand as enduring symbols of the first Bahamian immigrants’ settlement in one of Miami’s most dynamic neighborhoods. Originally built by the Bahamian workers who helped shape Coral Gables and Coconut Grove, these cottages are a testament to the rich cultural heritage that continues to thrive in the area. Today, Torre Companies has had the honor and privilege of restoring one of the vernacular shotgun cottages in a time when its protection and preservation is more important than ever.
The two-unit cottage sits along Oak Avenue, which runs at the edge of Coral Gables. The historically designated MacFarlane Homestead District derives its name from Flora McFarlane, a pioneering homesteader who sold 20 acres to George Merrick’s company and paved the way for the development of this unique historic subdivision. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, the McFarlane District is celebrated for its architectural significance, community planning, development, and ethnic heritage. Today, it remains the only historic district within Coral Gables recognized on the National Register.
Amid the significant new developments in South Florida, specifically in the Coconut Grove area, preserving the integrity of these historic cottages is crucial. Our work with the Grove Cottage focuses on respecting the original architectural style while carefully modernizing it to meet contemporary standards. This includes enhancing the structural integrity of the cottage and updating its mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, all while preserving the simplicity and utilitarianism that defines the original design. The cottage measures a total of 1,856 square feet, with each unit featuring two bedrooms, one bath, a full kitchen, laundry room and living space.
Through the preservation of this cottage, we strive to honor the historical and architectural significance that defines the McFarlane District. The Grove Cottage not only maintains the aesthetic and historical integrity of the area but also reflects our commitment to integrating heritage with modern needs. This delicate balance ensures that these structures remain a meaningful part of the community, adapting to the demands of contemporary living while celebrating the legacy of those who first called this area home.
